❔Why take the CIPM❔

The CIPM is the global industry standard in privacy programme management, and the only certification of its kind.

Having passed the CIPM is often an essential requirement for data protection officer and other privacy roles.

I work as the sole EMEA in-house counsel of a US-software company, and part of my responsibilities include privacy matters. I took the CIPM to have the foundational knowledge needed to help ensure that my organisation has a comprehensive privacy programme implemented. I wouldn’t have known where to start without having passed the CIPM.

If you are in a field or looking to work in an area which touches on privacy and data protection, having done the CIPM will:

✅ Give you a solid understanding of how to structure a privacy programme, including for example which policies and processes should be implemented for your organisation,

✅ Showcase your expertise in privacy management, thereby indicating your readiness for senior data protection or data protection officer roles,

✅ Help you add value to your organisation’s compliance efforts and give you leverage for promotions and salary increases, and

✅ Add credentials to your CV which will help you compete against other candidates in a busy job market.

📑How to study for the CIPM? 📑

You might be thinking, that all sounds great, sign me up for the CIPM - but how on earth do I find the time to work out what I need to know to pass the exam on my first attempt?

I completely understand - life gets busy. From a busy work schedule, to looking after your family, completing chores, etc., life can be very full-on without even thinking about studying for an advanced certification.

The CIPM does not come cheap (see the IAPP page for the latest applicable fees), therefore, it is vital to be prepared as possible to ensure you pass on the first attempt.

But you might say…

  • I don’t have the mental capacity to study…
  • I don’t have time to study alongside all my other commitments…
  • I don’t have the energy to study alongside everything else I do…
  • I don’t know where to start and don’t have time to do the research…
  • I am not ready to study for an advanced certification, I need more experience…
    ...

I completely get it. It’s not easy to study for the CIPM.

I studied for the CIPM whilst working full-time and not having had a lot of privacy management experience, and it was not fun! The last thing I wanted to do after a busy day at work, was sitting down in the evening, reading thick and clunky textbooks, teaching myself what I needed to know by trying to condense it all into digestible concepts that I could easily memorise.

🌴But just imagine if someone had done all the heavy lifting for you …🌴

and

  • … put everything you need to know in a single resource

  • … summarised in a concise format… and

  • …explained in such a way that anyone without any prior privacy experience can understand the content.

    Luckily, someone has.

👋About me 👋

Hi, I’m Maddie, your CIPM coach.

I am an in-house counsel at a US software company. I am a solicitor of England and Wales, and a New York Attorney. I have been working in in-house law since 2017, and data protection and privacy has been a nearly constant companion throughout my career.

In my current role as sole EMEA counsel, I am responsible for supporting the company’s compliance and privacy efforts. I had already passed the CIPP/E in 2021, however, I felt like I needed to learn more about structuring a comprehensive privacy programme within a company, which led me to the CIPM.

I passed the CIPM in 2023, and have had the opportunity to put into practice what I learned in my current role, allowing me to grow and further my career.

I am so excited to be sharing everything I wish I had known before taking the CIPM and making your revision and study experience as efficient and seamless as possible!
